E-Mail Tandem for high school students

Starting at the beginning of the next school year- that is in August of 1997 - E-Mail Tandem will be systematically offered for high school students. An important accompanying step is the recently decided upon establishment of the work area "Language Learning in Tandem" in the new server for education of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, learn:line. This work area, in which not only the International Tandem Network and the Seminar für Sprachlehrforschung der RUB but also the Landesinstitut für Schule und Weiterbildung in Soest will collaborate, will serve to inform students, parents and teachers and will prepare and organize accompanying measures such as the creation of special learning materials, the establishment of new fora, etc. Similar steps in other European countries will be aimed for.

Tandem Server in top 5% of German Web sites

The Tandem Server belongs to the top 5% of Web sites using the German language. This is at least the opinion of the experts at the ranking service "webTIP" (PC Magazin DOS). Although they rated only our old pages (no frames), they considered our server as belonging to the top 1997 sites. (Ranking from March/June 1997; we got a similar rating in 1996.)

New mirror sites

To make access to the Tandem Server easier for learners in Europe and other parts of the world, the partners of the EU ODL project "Telematics for Autonomous and Intercultural Learning in Tandem" have begun installing additional mirror sites: Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Télécommunications (ENST) Paris (since Jan 27), Università di Torino (since Feb 19), Trinity College, University of Dublin (since Feb 22).

Guide to language learning in tandem via the Internet

The "Guide to language learning in tandem via the Internet" is now available in 8 languages (Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish); the Italian version will follow in 1997. See special publication list.

New server structure and layout

We are restructuring and modernizing the information on this server about language learning in tandem (face-to-face tandem as well as distance tandem, e.g. via the Internet). Please, excuse any temporary problems. You can see the new structure already if you choose English, German or Spanish as your language. Suggestions are welcome. (brammerh@slf.ruhr-uni-bochum.de).
